iPod Saves Girl's Life, Twitter Kills Teen's

A teenage girl suffered burns when a lightning bolt was diverted through her iPod as she sheltered from a storm.

Sophie Frost, 14, and her boyfriend Mason Billington, also 14, sheltered under a tree in King George V Playing Field, in Rayleigh, Essex, during a thunder storm on Monday night.

Lightning struck and Sophie passed out as the current travelled through her iPod headphones, which were hanging from her school uniform, burning her chest and stomach.

Although his eyesight was affected by the bolt, Mason put Sophie over his shoulder and carried her to nearby Websters Way to get help. [AP]

Apple better give this girl a new iPod. It's the least they could do. Thanks to her they can officially confirm that iPod's do save lives (from lightning), just like seat belts (inside cars from lightning)!

Twitter on the other hand hasn't been as much of a lifesaver. 17 year-old Maria Barbu of Romania was twittering while in her bathtub. When she tried to reach the outlet to plug in her laptop, she was fatally electrocuted. [Aussie Times]

Apple To Buy Twitter? [Rumors]

The latest Apple rumor involves Twitter. According to TUAW, Apple is considering buying Twitter for $700 Million. All in all, there is no reason for Apple to buy Twitter. It does nothing for them financially and won't bring in customers. Google's attempt to buy Twitter recently was turned down and there doesn't seem to be a good enough reason for Twitter to accept this offer much less for Apple to even try to make the acquisition. Still, a relatively reliable source has told TUAW,

"Apple is in late-stage negotiations to buy Twitter and is hoping to announce it at WWDC in June."

Follow the Swine Flu on Twitter

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has a twitter page. You can follow their updates on the Swine Flu not-quite-a-pandemic-yet progress. I don't really care if you follow their updates, I only posted this because this picture was so damn hilarious! [CDCemergency, image via Gizmodo]

Jennifer Aniston Breaks Up with John Mayer

Jennifer Aniston has ended her relationship with John Mayer. The reason? Because he twitters too much apparently.

Mayer is obsessed with Twitter and other gadgets. Mayer would tell Aniston that he's busy with work even though he had time to twitter. This all comes from a Telegraph source.

"John suddenly stopped calling her or returning her emails and when she would finally catch up with him, he'd say: 'I've been so busy with work. I'm sorry I haven't had time to call you back."

The source added: "Jen was fuming. There he was, telling her he didn't have time for her and yet his page was filled with Twitter updates.

"Every few hours, sometimes minutes, he'd update with some stupid line. And in her mind, she was like 'He has time for all this Twittering, but he can't send me a text, an email, make a call?'."

After the break up, Mayer's twitter read: 'This heart didn't come with instructions.'

As Gizmodo points out, there is a bright side to this story:

Maybe the fact that he's now single will give him more time to provide tech support to his dad, play with his Sony Vaio, make two phone calls at once, punch out Tweets on his BlackBerry and get Apple products earlier than anyone else.

Shaq One Ups Villanueva

Shaq kept his promise to send out a "tweet" during the halftime of the Suns game against the Wizards. Last week, the Bucks' Charlie Villanueva sent out a tweet on his twitter at halftime and got some slack from the coaches for it. When you're the NBA spokesperson/entertainer/baller like Shaq, you can get away with it apparently.

Said the tweet:

Attention all twitterers I'm a tweet at halftime and not get fined like vill a new wave a whteva his name is

When Suns coach Alvin Gentry was informed that Shaq would post on twitter, he responded:

"If he gets 25 and 11, he can do anything he wants. He can Twitter, he can Facebook, he can -- whatever the hell the other one is, MySpace ... he gets 25 and 11, he can do just about anything he wants."

Twitter Coming to Adium?

Ducks can tweet too? Who knew?

In a recent blog entry, Zac West talks about integrating Twitter into Adium. The concept seems simple enough:

Twitter feeds can be followed or unfollowed by adding and removing them from your contact list. If you IM them, it'll send them a direct message. Your Twitter feed comes displayed in a group chat that you can keep open or closed as you need it. It's also very easy to reply to random Twitter links that you can find online. [TUAW]

West hopes to add TwitPic and other Twitter features into Adium.

Twitter Saves Lives! [Even Though One Person Died]

You've seen stories about how the iPod saved the lives of people trapped on a mountain. You've seen stories about people getting out of tickets using their iPhone.

Well, now you can add Twitter to the list of life savers.

LONDON (AP) -- A mountain rescue in the Swiss Alps that played out over the blogging Web site Twitter has ended with a missing British snowboarder found dead.

Swiss police say the 29-year-old's corpse was found in a stream at the foot of a cliff late Monday near Verbier. The Swiss ski resort near the French border is popular with British tourists. British media identified the man as Rob Williams and said he had been traveling with an Irish friend, Jason Tavaria, when they were separated from their group in bad weather.

They say their friends launched an online rescue effort and kept each other up to date over Twitter. An appeal to Internet users reportedly drew the number for Tavaria's iPhone, whose GPS function helped rescuers.

Tavaria was found unscathed nearby.
