PopCap Games Nets $1M with Plants vs. Zombies on iPhone

PopCap Games released Plants vs. Zombies on February 15th for the cheap price of $2.99 for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Today, they announced that they have reached the $1 Million mark.

Considering they sold 300,000 downloads in the first nine days and it takes 335,000 to reach $1 Million, they are probably way past that mark.

Talk about easy, take a great game for mac and pc and port it over to the iPhone and make an extra mil.

Final Fantasy 1 & 2 Available for iPhone

Final Fantasy 1 and 2 are now available for the iPhone in the app store. They cost $9 each. Both are packed with bonus dungeons for extra gameplay.

Street Fighter for iPhone

Street Fighter is coming to the iPhone. Eight characters, Ryu, Ken, Guile, Blanka, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, M. Bison and Abel will be available. The graphics look pretty good for the iPhone and it'll cost $10. It will be available sometime in March.

UPDATE: FOXNEWS.COM says that Apple will introduce their tablet, iPhone 4 (os 4.0) and iLife 2010. Clayton Morris:

"I spoke to a source at Apple this morning, before the invite hit my inbox, who said the event would likely focus on three projects: The tablet device, iPhone 4, and a new round of iLife 2010 software," Morris wrote. "While we won't see new iPhone hardware just yet, we will see the next-generation software."

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Coming to iPhone

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars had been confirmed for the Sony PSP early this month, but now we hear that it will be coming to the iTunes App store as a version made for the iPhone and iPod touch. Look for it to come out sometime this fall.

Don't Call It A Comeback: Zune HD

Reports of the Zune's death have been greatly exaggerated.

Those slick-looking babies you see there above are a couple of versions of the soon-forthcoming Microsoft Zune HD. Yes, the new Zune received a glowing (albeit, partial) review from CNET, and I have to say, it does sound pretty impressive.

Among the highlights:

- The Zune HD supports 720p video content, which you'll be able to purchase directly though the Zune Marketplace software... The only hitch to this arrangement is that the Zune's screen doesn't natively support 720p playback, so content does get scaled down to 480x272. Videos still look outstanding, though, and if they told me it was native 720p I would have believed them. You can get 720p natively out of the Zune HD, but you'll need to dock it into the optional HDMI Zune dock and run it to your TV.

- The music playback screen has also been given a lot of work. Without the benefit of a navigation pad or playback buttons, users will need to tap the middle of the screen once to access a large four-direction onscreen cross for play, skip, reverse, volume. Controls for favorites, shuffle and repeat are found conveniently near the bottom of the screen, instead of buried in sub-menus.

- Speaking of Wi-Fi, the Zune's new Web browser smokes. Not since first using the iPhone have I been this impressed with a mobile web browser. There's no branding on the browser, but I was told it was cooked up by Microsoft's Internet Explorer team (makes sense). Page load was snappy, and pinching and reorienting pages work just like the iPhone and iPod Touch. You also get a fast on-screen keyboard with a nice little magnifier effect with each keystroke. The only bad news on the browser is that there's no support for Flash audio and video content. So Pandora and YouTube are out, but I was able to get onto Facebook and Twitter.

Don't worry AAshish, I'm not jumping off the Apple ship just yet (or ever). After all, the review was written by a self-described "pretty big fan" of the Zune, even from its crappy infant days. But if credit is due, then credit will be given. We'll see when the Zune HD is released this fall.

Missouri's School of Journalism to Require iPod Touch, iPhones

If you are in high school and looking to get into Missouri's School of Journalism, make sure you take your iPod Touch or iPhone with you. You're going to need it. According to the Columbia Missourian, the school is going to make it a requirement that all students have one.

According to Brian Brooks, Associate Dean of the Journalism School:

"Lectures are the worst possible learning format. There’s been some research done that shows if a student can hear that lecture a second time, they retain three times as much of that lecture."

Freshmen that have been admitted will be sent a notice indicating the new requirement. However, the requirement will not be enforced, there will not be a penalty for students who don't get the fancy gadget.

"The reason we put required on it is to help the students on financial need," Brooks said. "If it’s required, it can be included in your financial need estimate. If we had not required it, they wouldn’t be able to do that."

The Associate Dean also pointed out that the school's students have received rebates from Apple when purchasing other equipment such as MacBooks and so they may have some sort of rebate for this as well. [Columbia Missourian]

New iPhone Details Coming From Someone "high-up" at AT&T

BoyGeniusReport has this information from someone "pretty high-up" over at AT&T about the announcement for the new iPhone that is supposedly coming out in June. Here are the detailed updates.

• New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh)
• New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
• U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
• Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
• AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
• Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?
• They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
• Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
• The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.

Granted that not all off the above will hold true, it seems like Apple is set to have a great summer.

Get Kindle Books on Your iPhone [F*** a Kindle]

The rumors were true. Amazon is now offering up a free app that allows you to download (via purchase) any book for the Kindle and then have it transferred to your iPhone. It was an obvious move and a bad one at that. I don't know how many stupid Kindle's you've sold Amazon, but now, you will sell even less.

And no, it won't be because you made this app and people will use it instead of buying a Kindle (although I'm sure some will). It is because the Kindle still sucks and it's still $350 dollars and you still have to buy books on it for $10 (which is about half price for the physical book). Hence after you buy about 20-35 books, you will have paid off your Kindle. Woopty f'in doo!

The one cool thing I do see is that the app will allow for color images (which the Kindle doesn't have). It also makes possible the idea of having frame by frame comics come to the iPhone for easy scrolling.

The Kindle app is now available at the iTunes App store. Oh, and by the way books are still selling at book stores, go buy one today.

Apple Continues to Stack their Cash

Apple's quarterly statement is out and while every company is losing money and even Microsoft is laying people off, Apple is going strong. They posted $1.61 Billion in profit. Also, sales were up across the board. Macs were up 9%, iPods up 3%, iPhones up 88%. They have now sold more than 10 Million iPhone 3Gs. [Engadget]
