MMS Finally Coming to iPhone on September 25th

News from AT&T says that MMS will be available on the iPhone 3G and 3GS beginning September 25th via a software update.



The date is September 25th, which does indeed fall a few days past the official end of summer. It was important to give our customers a positive experience from day one. We support more iPhone customers than any other carrier in the world so we took the time necessary to make sure our network is ready to handle what we expect will be a record volume of MMS traffic. We truly appreciate our customers' patience and hope they'll understand our desire to get it right from the start.

The service will be enabled with a software update on the launch date. Customers can obtain the update from iTunes, just like all other iPhone updates.

As for tethering, by its nature, this function could exponentially increase traffic on the network, and we need to ensure that some of our current upgrades are in place before we can deliver the expanded functionality with the excellent performance that customers expect. Not so Illegal Way to use Tethering with iPhone 3.0

It's still unknown if AT&T will charge any fees for this, but many people have found ways to make the still unavailable tethering on iPhone's 3.0 firmware...available. It's a small short hack, but if it works for free it would probably top my list of favorite things on the iPhone 3.0 firmware. Choose the provider and country and then enable tethering on the iPhone. Follow the above video on how to configure tethering.

MLB at Bat App to Stream Live Full Games over 3G!

In truly historic fashion, the MLB at Bat app will begin streaming full LIVE games over 3G networks tomorrow. Soon after the 3.0 firmware hits today, the app will have the capacity to do the streaming.

If you remember, back in March, the CBS Sports app allowed users to stream live NCAA basketball games for March Madness over the iPhone using a wifi connection. However, the fact that MLB will stream over 3G makes the app 100% portable. Practically anywhere you go (except the subway I guess) you can watch a full game! Making the $10 app totally worth it considering you can get gameday audio and updated scores highlights and play-by-play as well.

If you're a baseball fan, the first game will be at 2:20 EST between the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs followed by the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals at 8:20 EST.

If you're not a baseball fan, just think what this could mean for the future of TV. Tivo got rid of the time restraint for watching your favorite shows. This could very well mean that shows could be streamed live as well! [Gizmodo]

This Could be a Good Reason to Buy a Macbook Air

I'm not a fan of the MacBook Air. It's very cool looking and small and convenient to carry around. But all-in-all, it doesn't have the punch I'm looking for when I go out to buy a portable computer. First off, it's not as fast as the MacBook (no, not even the white plastic one). Nor does it have too many expandable slots. There are 3 items that can be plugged in, and if you have a odd shaped USB drive, you won't be able to plug in other things. It just becomes a pain.

But, if this rumor is true, I might be able to overlook the crappy aspects of the MacBook Air. According to SiliconRumors, Apple will release new versions of the MacBook Air with the ability to connect to 3G networks and come with a price drop. To me, this is a huge upgrade. To have the ability to connect to a fast network while on the go is what really makes laptops portable. Taking a computer with you without the internet is like having the iPhone with app store Yeah, it's useful, but it could be so much better.

This said, whether or not people will buy more MacBook Airs will probably depend on the monthly access fees for the 3G networks. For the right price, this could very well hike sales of the Air beyond the sales of the current MacBooks. [SiliconRumors]

AT&T iPhone Plan Price Drop Rumors

Rumors say today that AT&T may create a price drop for the entry level iPhone plan from $69 to $59 a month. This would be more than likely the case for the iPhone 3G and would take place over the summer when the new supposed iPhone is released.

For customers, this would be a net savings of $120 a year. For AT&T, they would be making room for new inventory of iPhones and attracting new customers for the cheaper iPhone 3G plan. Most likely, the new iPhone plan would be $69 a month and old iPhone plans would either stay the same. There's no reason to drop the old phone's price plan because, well, they don't make them any more and the plan only exists for people who still have that old phone. They can't attract any new customers by lowering that plan.

Time for March Madness...on Your iPhone

CBS Sports has announced that they will stream the NCAA tournament games live on the iPhone or iPod Touch via a new app. The app will cost $4.99 and will require you to be on a wi-fi connection.

I know, who the hell is going to pay for it? But that's not the point. The fact that it can and will be done is very cool. I don't expect anyone to pay 5 bucks to watch games on their iPhone or iPod Touch. Especially when you can go online and watch all of the games for free. And, chances are, wherever you have wi-fi, you'll have a TV or computer to watch the games anyway. Either way I'm very excited for 2 things. First that live streaming is taking place on the iPhone and second, for March Madness!

The app itself, will have other features besides just streaming the games. You'll be able to find new stats and breaking news as they come in. If you don't have wifi access, you can still listen to the game over your EDGE or 3G service.

When the tournament is over on April 6th, the app will expire. So, who's willing to pay 5 bucks to watch NCAA action on the iPhone? [Apple Insider]
