A man is suing the Kansas City Royals after an incident where the mascot, Slugger, threw a hot dog at a man's eye, leaving him with a detached retina.
The incident took place during a game last year where Slugger was launching hot dogs to fans using a hot dog launcher. Eventually he put the gun down and started tossing the weiners by hand. Unfortunately one was thrown at John Coomer who was struck directly in the eye (good aim?).
Coomer's complaint says that the mascot wasn't trained properly and was recklessly throwing hot dogs into the stands and is suing for $25k for negligence and battery.
Since the incident, Coomer has developed cataracts.
Wonder if he ate the hot dog or took it to go...[TMZ]
This morning was bad, and by morning I mean afternoon (since that's when I usually wake up when I work nights). I'm kind of sick...congestion, runny nose, just don't feel like doing anything. But I know the Yankees are playing game 6 of the World Series, up 3 games to 2. Pettitte on the mound facing off against Pedro. Yea, that's what made me get up this morning.
I'm still slightly annoyed that the Yanks didn't finish off the Phillies in game 5. They came back but just came up short (ugh Jeter, why did you have to hit into the double play in the 9th!). See, the Denver Nuggets are playing the NJ Nets at the IZOD Center, and while I'm not a fan of either team, it would be cool to watch Carmelo Anthony go off on the Nets (he was okay, 22/4/1). So if the Yanks had won game 5, I would have gotten a chance to make it out for the Nuggets/Nets game. But oh well, World Series takes precedent over two teams I'm not even a fan of. I gave away the tickets to a friend (obviously not a Yankee fan). Even my girlfriend (a Nets fan) didn't want to go to the Nets game, because she'd rather watch the Yankees in the World Series(Nets/Nuggets tickets were going for 3 dollars on stubhub).
I wake up and take my time getting ready. Drudge through some daily chores and by 5 p.m., I'm ready to leave for work in Chelsea section of Manhattan. I have to be at work at 6, so leaving at 5pm is early, considering I can usually get from Fort Lee, NJ to my work in about 30 minutes on a normal day. But this isn't a normal day. Yankees play at home in the World Series, plenty of traffic on the George Washington Bridge, so I left at 5 instead.
Listening to more traffic reports, there are accidents on the Cross Bronx Expressway, GW Bridge backed up 40 minutes. So I go through my routes of getting from my house toward the bridge. Roads are closed, redirected, held up by police. After sitting in a lane for about 10 minutes, I tried another road,...and then another. It's about 5:30 and I haven't even been able to get out of my home town. I'm pissed. Drake and Lupe Fiasco are getting me through it though.
I decide to call in to work and let them know I'm running late. I decide to try and take the Lincoln Tunnel from Hoboken. Go down River Road in Edgewater and make it toward the entrance of the tunnel by 5:50 pm. Still going to be late, but probably not as bad. I was wrong. Traffic was bad there as well. Still pissed, I make my way through the tunnel and head downtown to Chelsea. Park, and manage to get to work by 6:30. An hour and a half to get 11 miles. Heck, I could have driven to Philly in that much time!
But I'm at work now, time to focus on baseball and the Yankees. Pettitte pitches great, even on 3 days rest (yea take that critics (certain WFAN host) and shove it!). Matsui's success against Pedro continues. He ends the night with 3 hits for 6 RBIs (and the MVP trophy). Yanks have a fairly comfortable 7-3 lead, Joba and Marte help the Yanks get through the 6,7 and part of the 8th. Time for Mo! No problem getting through the 8th, Yankees don't score any more runs, onto the 9th!
I tell my co-worker: The 2 most comforting songs played back to back are Metallica'sEnter Sandman and Frank Sinatra's New York, New York. The former for being Mariano Rivera's intro music as he comes out of the bullpen and the latter (as any Yankee fans and New Yorkers know) plays at the stadium when the Yankees win.
His response: Amen brother!!!!!!
Mo takes care of the 9th, as usual. Yankees win. In office Yankee fans are excited. Laughing, high fives, a hug. Excitement, joy and happiness take over, we joke about the centaur story about A-Rod and how the Phillies are done. It's all summed up in this picture:
I know some Mets fans enjoyed that!
It's 2am, time to go home. I get to my car, make my way up the West Side Highway and onto the GW bridge going into NJ. Ugh! More F'ing traffic! two left lanes are packed with trucks and some cars. It looks like the right lane is closed and further down the two center lanes are closed as well. Once again I'm annoyed, but still happy about the victory and number 27!
Someone starts honking. At first I think it's at me, but I didn't do anything, I only moved forward half an inch. But then I realize, they are honking a tune. Not sure what tune, but I know whoever is honking is Yankee fan coming back from the game and pumped from the win. Other fans coming home start honking too. I think about joining in on the honking, but that would be out of sync and lame. Only one thing to do. Roll down the windows (in 45 degree weather), open the moon roof, crank the stereo up all the way, and hit play on my iPod:
I'm sure some of the honking cars could hear it, I saw some truckers rocking out to it. BEST TRAFFIC EXPERIENCE EVER! And a day I will remember forever. Yankees are world champs again! Mo, Jeter, A-Rod, Teixeira, Jorge, Swisher, CC, Burnett, Pettitte, Joba...WORLD CHAMPS! So a lot of crap happened today, but I'll remember how I enjoyed number 27 sitting in traffic on the GW Bridge for the rest of my life.
This ad ran in the Philadelphia Inquirer today. The paper apologized for printing it. Too bad everyone knows how stupid they are thanks to the internet.
Yankees look to win the World Series tonight as they have a 3-1 lead in the series.
This woman (Susan Finkelstein, a Phillies fan) was busted by cops for allegedly selling herself on Craigslist for World Series tickets.
According to police, her online ad read: "DESPERATE BLONDE NEEDS WS TIX (Philadelphia) Diehard Phillies fan--gorgeous tall buxom blonde-- in desperate need of two World Series Tickets. Price negotiable--- I'm the creative type! Maybe we can help each other!" [MyFoxPhilly]
Philly phanatics were on the prowl last night as their beloved team won the NLCS and is going to the World Series. The celebration was going to be crazy no matter what. Some people are idiots and try to climb over cabs in drive. Good thing local tv stations carry post game celebrations live!
And there it is. The one we've pretty much been waiting for and pretty much have expected. According to the New York Times, Big Papi and Manny are both on the list of 104 MLB players who tested positive for steroids in 2003. Add them to Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriguez, all of whom have already been linked to the list over the past year.
Well, this is quite the non-surprise. And to reiterate, it does not change how I feel about Manny or Papi. It is what it is: fucking everybody has been taking steroids since Brady Anderson hit fucking 50 home runs in the mid-90s, not to mention the Bash Brothers doing it even before that. Let's get over it, and adjust the curve accordingly please. It wasn't even illegal (in MLB rules), so who the fuck cares. Let's just accept that people were using *legal* shit to make them better, faster, stronger, and now that we've banned it, let's move on. Like swimming.
Jack Nicholson is filming a movie in Philadelphia and was at Citizen's Bank Park last night for the Phillies game against the Cubs. The Phanatic took notice, hilarity ensued.
This is what live baseball on my iPhone looks like! Not too shabby! The top image is from a 3G connection and the bottom image is from an EDGE connection. There are plenty of pauses over the EDGE and a lot smoother over 3G, but it seems like it would have solid performance over wifi. There's nothing quite like hearing Ken Harrelson say "He Gone!" More testing to come with 3GS tomorrow!
In truly historic fashion, the MLB at Bat app will begin streaming full LIVE games over 3G networks tomorrow. Soon after the 3.0 firmware hits today, the app will have the capacity to do the streaming.
If you remember, back in March, the CBS Sports app allowed users to stream live NCAA basketball games for March Madness over the iPhone using a wifi connection. However, the fact that MLB will stream over 3G makes the app 100% portable. Practically anywhere you go (except the subway I guess) you can watch a full game! Making the $10 app totally worth it considering you can get gameday audio and updated scores highlights and play-by-play as well.
If you're a baseball fan, the first game will be at 2:20 EST between the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs followed by the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals at 8:20 EST.
If you're not a baseball fan, just think what this could mean for the future of TV. Tivo got rid of the time restraint for watching your favorite shows. This could very well mean that shows could be streamed live as well! [Gizmodo]
Here is a screenshot of a picture of New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and center fielder Melky Cabrera on a couch with a couple hos nice young ladies somewhere in a basement some club.
The screenshot comes courtesy of today's Deadspin Deleted Scenes. For those of you generally unfamiliar with our beloved Deadspin, here is their description of the Deleted Scenes post:
"We get a massive amount of tips in our inbox each week. Some are pretty interesting, but don't get published for one reason or another.
It's usually because they're just so absurd or really lack even the most tenuous of news angles to give them the go-ahead. Other times it's because they're just absolute horseshit. But every Friday until we get sick of running them, we'll present to you some of these not-so-shiny gems."
Lacking news angles indeed. I don't even know what to say about this story, other than, those who would care about this post will care about this post.
It's funny - if you go to the blog that Deadspin links to, and gives credit to for the picture, this is what is said about the less-than-scandalous photos:
"NY Sport Space has some friends in high places. So high that its fairly easy to acquire some EXCLUSIVE photos of Melky Cabrera and Robbie Cano popping bottles and making kissy faces." (Emphasis in original.)
Friends in high places, eh? Acquaintances on the internet works too. In fact, these aren't exclusive at all - they're pretty public. Umm nice try.
Anyway, don't forget to check the Deleted Scenes comments section for a little late-Friday commentary and hilarity. For instance:
Crazy Joe Clark 2:20 PM
Cano can do better than that. Melky is probably overachieving right now with those girls, he'll be back to banging the fatties by July. ______________________________________
ekthesy 2:22 PM
Melky seems to have summoned the ghost of Jan Brady.
Official announcement from MLB will come later today.
Right from Peter Gammons's mouth right now as I watch SportsCenter: Scott Boras says -- and Gammons believes him -- that Manny had an ailment, went to his doctor in Florida who prescribed something for Manny and assured Manny that it was fine to take, turns out it wasn't okay.
The Dodgers are 21-8 (modern record 13-0 at home); Manny's batting .348 with 6 HRs and 20 RBIs. Holy shit.
Manny released the following statement to the press via the MLBPA:
Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me. Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now.
I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons. I want to apologize to Mr. McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, Mr. Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I'm sorry about this whole situation.
I have to say, this is awful news for baseball fans. I've always liked Manny, even to a certain extent when he was on the Sox (i.e. to the extent that they weren't beating us), him and Papi. Both nice enough guys, funny guys. I hope he's able to get through this relatively unscathed, career wise, but to do that, he's gotta definitively prove everything he said in that statement. Doctor, medication, prescription, failed test, positive tests - everything. Really pulling for him.
He was only 22 years old. The crash (I refuse to call it an accident) occurred early this morning, just hours after he pitched six scoreless against Oakland last night. The driver of the other car, who ran a red light to cause the crash, fled the scene on foot, but was caught a mile away and received a felony hit-and-run charge.
SportsCenter had this question to viewers. It's a good one.
Who would you want on your team? Terrell Owens, Manny Ramirez or Alex Rodriguez?
They are all superstars and considered one of the best in their respective sport. I'd add Sean Avery and Stephon Marbury to that list for a NHL and NBA representation, but both those guys are replaceable.
I'd say TO. At least he'll play every possible game for you and he'll come through in the clutch.
