J.D. Salinger Dead at 91

"Catcher in the Rye" author J.D. Salinger has died at age 91 in New Hampshire.

The author's son, in a statement from the author's literary representative, says Salinger died of natural causes at his home. He had lived for decades in self-imposed isolation in the small, remote house in Cornish, N.H.

"The Catcher in the Rye" with its immortal teenage protagonist -- the twisted, rebellious Holden Caulfield -- came out in 1951 during the time of anxious, Cold War conformity.

Salinger wrote for adults, but teenagers all over the world identified with the novel's themes of alienation, innocence and fantasy.

In later years, Salinger become famous for not wanting to be famous, refusing interviews.

Apple "Latest Creation" Event

Fin. So basically predictions about an iPhone on steroids are correct. Except you can't make calls...so an iPod Touch on steroids. It's a good product, but I think everyone wanted a little bit more. So did stockholders as shares slightly dipped. It's really nothing revolutionary, it needs a bit more work and a nicer look, I've got big expectations for the next generation of this iPad...ugh what a shitty name....

"We think we've got the goods. We think we've done it. Another thing we're excited about is that there's already 75m people who know how to use this because of how many iPhones and iPod touches we've shipped."
Clips from the ad they'll be posting online shortly...So far, no word on multitasking, nothing on making phone calls, nothing on notifications.

A case for the iPad.
Accessories include a hard keyboard.
release date: March 27th, April 27th.

Pricing looks reasonable...
Pricing starts at $499 for the iPad. Nothing else is included, you activate AT&T service through the 3G version of the iPad. "If you listen to the pundits, we're going to price it under $1000, which is code for $999. When we set out to develop this, we had ambitious tech goals, but we had aggressive price goals. And just like we were able to meet or exceed our tech goals, we have met our cost goals... iPad pricing starts at $499."

"WiFI plus 3G if you want it. So iPad. It's phenomenal. Email is fantastic, best device for photos, great for music, great for video. It runs almost all of the 140k apps on the app store, as well as a whole new generation of apps."
The 3G models are unlocked and use a micro SIM card. I'm sure other wireless service providers will come out with these as well, woooo for alternatives to AT&T....
It looks like 3G is optional...you don't have to pay for the AT&T service if you don't want to...
While some laptops cost 60 bucks for wireless internet, iPad will be cheaper and WITH AT&T...
TWO PRICING PLANS...

Sync will work as usual.
zzZZzzzzZZzzzzz....They're going to charge $10 for each app, aka $10 for keynote, $10 for pages....
iWork in action....

It'll come with iWork...iWork requires a lot of hardware acceleration and the iPad's got it.
Pricing looks to be about the same as some regular books...but full on color looks great.
The iBook store will be a different app from the App Store and iTunes Store.
They got iBooks from a bunch of publishers...Apple had to compete with the E-Readers and this is going to do the trick obviously.

And for those who want to watch live games, they got that too. I'm guessing 99 cents per game or free if you have the mlb.tv package. Steve Jobs comes back on stage...says these folks only had 2 weeks to come up with this stuff, so I guess it's pretty impressive...

MLB.com's Chad Evans shows off the MLB.com App made specifically for the iPhone. It's got instant replay built into MLB Game Day.

EA Sports shows off Need for Speed Shift. It looks like this is also specifically made for the iPad as graphics looks better. This is the only game they showed off...pretty lame, where's Madden??
The NY Times App made specifically for the iPad makes it easier to navigate than a lot of E-Reader type gadgets. At first it looked just like going to the NY Times website, but there's soo much more underneath. Options, options, options.

They'll spotlight apps that are specifically for iPad.

Scott Forstall: "So all of the iPhone apps will run on this. In fact when you buy it, download all the apps you have right onto the iPad. Now if the developer spends some time modifying their app, they can take full advantage of this display." SDK is released today.
Can run all iPhone apps unmodified out of the box.

Up to all of Apple's products in the environmental dept.

10 HOURS OF BATTERY TIME IS HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"What is the battery life like? We've been able to achieve 10 hours of battery life. I can take a flight from San Francisco to Tokyo and watch video the whole time. And it has over a month of standby time."

All your basic iPhone specs, available in 16, 32 and 64 GB versions.

Specs! "It's powered by our own silicon. The 1GHz Apple A4 chip. It screams."

Movies from iTunes in HD as well...

Google Maps and Street view.

Photos....flicks and gestures work the same, pinch to zoom...etc. It can also detect places just like iPhoto, group pictures by faces and places.
Email...so far its exactly like a giant iPhone with a shitty name,...iPad...ugh...
Grrr... still no flash, mother f-ers
Video...YouTube works in HD...
YouTube...
iTunes...
Maps...
Contacts...
Calendar...

"We think we've got something that is better. And we call it the iPad." WHAT A F'ING TERRIBLE NAME...."Now some people thought that was a netbook -- the problem is that netbooks aren't better than anything!" APPLAUSE!

"So all of us use laptops and smartphones... the question has arisen; is there room for something in the middle. We've wondered for years as well -- in order to create that category, they have to be far better at doing some key tasks... better than the laptop, better than the smartphone."
"So let's get to the main event."
"We want to kick of 2010 by introducing a magical and revolutionary product today... but first I have a few updates." BOOOOOO...

That's quite a weird set up, just a couch for a single person (presumably Jobs) and a small table.
