Google was tinkering with this for a while. But its fully functional now. You can send text messages to any US phone number as of now from your gmail. The people at Google Labs have made me love gmail even more! Google Labs explains how to make it work. But basically all you have to to is go to setting and enable SMS, then search for a phone number and save it as your contact (or as one of your existing contacts) and then text away.
I just tried it and it works! Also, after sending the first txt, you automatically get a txt telling you all about the new feature. Pretty cool, though I hope it doesn't run up people's phone bills.
