There's an article in the NY Times about how to low-cost fixes for high-tech devices. One of them is regarding cell phone batteries. The article cites another website, Battery University, which says keeping your phone away from you body (thus away from heat) can help save your battery life. So a good idea would be to get a holster and not put it in your jean pockets.
