I just feel that Deadspin got totally robbed in this year's bloggies. Deadspin is, without a doubt, a top five blog when it comes to sports, if not number 1. Yet, they weren't nominated for even 1 bloggie award! For Christ's sake, THEY were the ones to come out with the Mark McGuire steroids story. In fact, real sports news media (ESPN, AP) were crediting them! That's how credible they are. Get a clue bloggies before you lose YOUR credibility.
This is the biggest snub since The Dark Knight got left off the Best Picture category at the Oscars,...oh wait, that wasn't too long ago...
I'm not saying that The Dark Knight should have won the category flat out. I think that's arguable. BUT, what is not arguable is that it wasn't even nominated. I don't think any one person can actually tell me that Benjamin Button, Slumdog, Frost/Nixon, Milk, and The Reader are ALL BETTER THAN THE DARK KNIGHT!
At the same time, lets take another look at what the term "Best Picture" really means. It has nothing to do with the amount of money a film makes, the fanfare behind it, nor the way it changes "the movie experience." Because obviously if it did, then TDK would have not only been nominated but flat out won. It ranks #2 in all time grossing movies in the U-S, had some of the craziest viral and live fanfare (fake newspapers, interactive manhunt, jokerized ads), and lets not forget that the film had made millions of dollars before it even showed its first showing simply from the pre-ordered tickets purchased for the midnight showings across America.
The Academy's description for the best picture is the film overall (including acting, story, cinematography, etc). Now I know the complaints, TDK didn't have a great storyline it was just some guy being crazy. Or, the acting sucked with the exception of Heath Ledger. In this case, you'd have to recognize the fact that these characters are based on comic book characters and see how well they did matched up to those fictional characters. If you look at it that way, it's very difficult to say that all the acting was bad, instead it was pretty damn accurate! And even though I hate the fact that actors who play lunatics get away with winning oscars just because they play some crazy guy (ie Daniel Day Lewis from There Will Be Blood.) Just because you play some insane character, doesn't mean you deserve a oscar when the rest of the movie sucked horribly.
But I digress, there is no one on this planet who thinks that those 5 films are all better than TDK. I dare anyone to prove me wrong. The academy needs to step up its game just like the bloggies.
