What Are Those Weird Looking Boxes Next to the NY Times Crossword Puzzle?

It's a new numbers game. It's called KenKen. Yeah, I know, weird. Apparently, it's a Japanese numerical puzzle. Kind of like Sudoku, but you have to know first grade math to figure it out (already too much work for me).

According to Kotaku:

KenKen was developed by Japanese teacher Tetsuya Miyamoto, who founded the Miyamoto Math Classroom in Tokyo. Miyamoto uses puzzle solving about 90 minutes a week in his classroom.

Here's the online version.
